Often an automated storage system is only one part of a larger sample processing workflow. Matching the throughput of the storage system to the sample processing workflow is critical and any impedance mismatch caused by the automated storage system can lead to inefficient sample processing and slower sample cycle times. Alternatively, higher throughput can enable new and more flexible processes such as focused screening and higher responsiveness in applications where turnaround time is critical, such as lead optimization. Achieving higher throughput requires matching the store configuration with the rate-limiting steps within the system's common workflows. Increasing the throughput by simply adding more hardware may not necessarily generate cost-efficient throughput gains. Software that intelligently optimizes the system workflow can not only make dramatic improvements in throughput, it can also result in a system that is robust to changes in use case. Computer modelling combined with live system analysis for step-wise hardware and software upgrades validate throughput gains and use case sensitivity for a mixture of hardware and software upgrades. The result is a comprehensive guide to pairing hardware and software features to gain the most cost-efficient impacts in throughput and use case robustness.
